Navarasa Dance Theater

Navarasa Dance Theater is a contemporary dance theater company founded by renowned dancer and choreographer, Aparna Sindhoor in 1991 in Mysore, India. The creative team of Aparna Sindhoor, SM.Raju (Rajendran Sivasankaran) and Anil Natyaveda has created works that is new in style and content. They have created over fifteen full length dance theater works and presented them at sold out shows to diverse audiences. Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda have toured extensively in North America, Europe and India, and has been invited to perform at various venues including the Jacob's Pillow, New Haven Festival of Arts and Ideas, World Social Forum, New World Theater (Amherst, MA), Teesri Duniya Theater (Montreal, Canada,)Amol Palekar's Theater Festival (Pune, India,)and Edinburgh Festival.

Navarasa Dance Theater (NDT) has a wide repertoire of solo and group works in classical and contemporary dance and theater.  Inspired by Indian classical and folk dance forms, theater (both Western and Indian), world music, martial arts (Kalarippayattu), aerial dance, yoga, live singing and storytelling, NDT’s  work is dynamic, radical, and original style of dance theater. 

NDT is known for its shows with themes that deal with human issues in a meaningful way that makes audiences enjoy and be touched at the same time.  Presented with wonderful comic timing, innovative and stylistic choreography, NDT draws audiences from different backgrounds connect to the work both at an individual and collective level.  NDT has performed at the Lincoln Center, New York, NJPAC and other theater and dance festivals all around the world including at Beyond Words: International Theater Festival in Pune, India.  Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda are currently working with Prime Time Entertainment to create Franco Dragone’s new show INDIA in Germany. 

NDT is currently touring:

A Story and A Song: Inspired by Kannada folklore, Native American stories and narratives from contemporary women, A Story and A Song is a metaphorical dance tale of women, environment and sensuality.

The Encounter: A dance-theater based on a Bengali short story written by renowned writer Mahasweta Devi. Dopdi, an indigenous woman, fights her battle against injustice with intelligence, strength and courage that is astonishing. Kalari ppayattu, yoga and dance along with drums and live singing bring together the story of a woman whose strength is unmatched.

God of War: A dance theater piece based on Kalari ppayttu martial art is a tribute to the Kalari warrior, Unni aarcha.

Piece works: Several short pieces ranging from five-minutes to twenty-minutes each.

Indian Classical Dance Works: Evening length Indian Classical Dance Works. Other dance theater works are available for performance upon request.
